The Lady Ho Tung Welfare Centre was completed in 1933 and officially commenced service in 1934. It was one of the first rural clinics built in the New Territories, providing medical services to villagers in Kwu Tung, Kam Tsin Tsuen, Ho Sheung Heung and Ma Tso Lung. In the early days, it mainly offered obstetrics and mother-and-child center services, and was also a sanatorium for Indian soldiers. Later, general outpatient services were added. In 2005, the welfare centre was closed due to roof damage, officially completing its historical mission as a medical institution.

In 2009, the Antiquities and Monuments Office classified the welfare centre as a Grade II historic building, which is a building of special value that needs to be selectively preserved. In 2015, Sik Sik Yuen got the bid for the project to revitalise the welfare centre, preserving its valuable architectural elements and transforming it into an ecological learning institute, contributing to ecological education in Hong Kong.
